“The Green Monkey”, George Stubbs – description of the painting

Description of the picture:

Green Monkey – George Stubbs. Canvas, oil. 70 x 60 cm

Among the outlandish animals that often end up in England were different species of monkeys. George Stubbs makes several anatomical drawings of these animals, writes several paintings with their image. One of them is in front of us.

Dark, almost black trees in the background frame the picture. Piled in a bunch of ripe peaches lie in the shade. Even the flowers curling along the trunks are a faded gray-white hue. As usual, the background of the painter plays a secondary role, allowing you to highlight the main thing.

Attention immediately attracts a small monkey, lit by the sun. The master writes her in warm amber tones. She sits calmly on the rocks, holding a branch and picking peaches with a long paw.

Thick golden brown fur shimmers in the sun, changing its color from light sand to dark olive shades. Fluffy long hair frames the muzzle and forms a bright red hat on the head of the animal. Small ears are almost invisible. Glittering eyes on an expressive face look intently at the viewer.

An artist with the inherent skill carefully writes out details: long legs with dexterous fingers, a strong muscular tail, black palms. The pose of the monkey is absolutely natural. The skill of the painter is a delight – the animal seems alive.

People have been admiring animals at all times, and we, too, have the opportunity to enjoy the magnificent works of George Stubbs."
